One-Hour Landscapes

This landscape is one of four I made for a digital painting exercise. I chose it because of the complexity of the water, the path or trail, and the sunlight on the mountains and how it marks the divisions between them. I think that, together with the clouds, which also have different tones, it creates a nice visual interplay and the overall composition feels balanced.

Then, with this other one, it seems an hour wasn’t enough, since the landscape was also more complex. In the end, the goal was to get across the core idea of what I wanted to show, never to reach realism. Also, something quite important to point out is that everything was done using a single brush.

Personally, I like this kind of exercise because it forces me to work out the structures and the layout of the elements using larger shapes. All of this was for an assignment in the “concept art” course, which is basically illustration; they just give it a different name so it doesn’t seem so repetitive in the curriculum.

Lastly, I chose this landscape for its mountains, which I personally find beautiful because of all the different blues. Unlike the first one, it has much cooler tones, which gives it a different feel. It also has different finishes depending on the elements it contains. I’d like to mention that, although the exercise was one hour long, painting realism in oil made some things less complicated when it came to getting good results.
